What work does God want me to do? Do you think of God as alive, active and engaged? Remarkably, the “gods” in almost every non-Christian religion are passive, abstract or merely historical figures. Jesus said, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working” (John 5:17). God did not simply create the universe with an explosive burst of divine energy—then back off to let creation run itself. He remains intimately involved, infusing His sustaining power and influence into every circumstance and situation (see Colossians 1:17). This truth has huge implications for the way we live. If we miss the intensity of God’s direct involvement, we will either work independently of Him (secularism) or workforHim, as “little helpers.” His concept is neither. It is to workwithHim. Think of it this way: The God of the universe is actually giving you the privilege to join Him in His work. That’s much different than doing your own thing and checking in with Him now and then. Instead, as His coworker, your “antennae” are up, alerting your every sense to His activity. Nothing is random. Nothing is beyond His redemptive reach. For example: *.You notice the sad face of a friend who has lost a loved one, and you extend God’s comfort and compassion. *.You are captivated by a truth you discover in a new book and you talk about it with others. *.A traffic jam causes you to miss a flight. Later, you discover God had a purpose in this apparent set-back. Think about your current situation—as a student, or as you begin your work career or start a family. Are you changing jobs, or planning to retire? You’re not where you are by accident. Adjust your focus away fromyouragenda toGod’sby asking: “Where areYouworking, and how can I join You inYourwork?” We are workers together with Him (see 2 Corinthians 6:1).
