Whatever you think about this issue is not the point here. The point is that this theological issue was elevated to a place of prominence in Christian thought for no good reason. It became a litmus test for orthodoxy and fidelity to scripture for no good reason. There were reasons, but not good ones. I think it was a handy issue for ministers to rail against, demonstrating their Biblical fidelity and conservative bona fides without pissing off their constituents. The very definition of a false prophet, by the way. Prophetic when there is no cost. I said years ago that conservative Christians will fold on this issue the moment it costs them something. The moment they lose members and money because of their stance on gay marriage, they will suddenly see the light and change their tune. That turning may be beginning now. And of course, Republicans, who have no reason to oppose gay marriage apart from losing the religious rights vote, will jump on the bandwagon as soon as it is safe.
