Whats going on in Hong Kong? Guy: Theres a simple protest going on, and they are looking for universal suffrage. The Chinese government isnt going to grant them that, and so the people arent very happy with that. Theres a history about this. When the British signed the treaty to hand over Hong Kong to China, the Chinese government agreed to give us elections, and that we get our own chief executive. Now, they said they would scan the candidates; so theyll pick out a candidate for us, as if we dont have any say at all. Gal: Its not what they promised us, and its not real democracy! So now were standing up to the government, saying that we dont agree with you, but we can compromise!. But the Hong Kong government isnt willing to come out and talk to the public. So now were protesting, and thousands of students arent going to school, fighting to protect our home. Guy: Since yesterday evening, the police have been using tear gas and pepper spray on the peaceful protesters. They didnt burn any cars, or damage any stores, and they just sat there. Gal: We just sat there, using our umbrellas to protect ourselves from pepper spray. The government sees us holding our umbrellas as an offensive action, so they said they would equalize and take action by clearing the government square. They even used rubber bullets! We hope that today by standing here, we can send our support back home. Even though we are far away, we want to show them that we still care for our homeland. If you guys were in Hong Kong, would you be with them? Guy: Of course! Right in the middle, on the front-lines. Its a shame I cant be there with my friends right now. All of this was said with a beautiful choir of students in the background, singing songs of freedom. Lets show our support for our fellow students, and fellow characters abroad!
