Whats going wrong in this region ????? Tiger kills woodcutter, injures another CHANDRAPUR: A tiger killed one man and injured another in the predawn hours of Wednesday in FDCMs Jharan range. The fifth human kill by wild animals has further escalated the man-animal conflict in fringe forest areas of Chandrapur. Victim Mohansingh Thakur (45) and Ganesh Mendade (35), both from village Berdi, had gone to Bhatali forest to chop wood early in the morning. While they were moving through compartment no. 120, a lurking tiger charged at them at around 4.30am. While Thakur died in the attack, Mendade escaped with a few injuries. Both of them had rushed to scale nearby trees to escape the tiger. The beast, however, clawed Thakur on his leg while he was trying to climb the tree and dragged him down. A terrified Thakur had in haste selected a thin tree which was difficult to scale, making him an easy target, said in-charge RFO, Jharan range, DM Uke. The details were narrated by Mendade, who escaped the tiger attack. Mendade said he fortunately selected a broader tree for climbing. The tiger attacked Mendade also, but he managed to scale the tree despite the beast clawing him on the legs. Two other villagers who had ventured into the jungle to cut wood fled on seeing Thakur and Mendade being attacked. Mendade returned to the village after the tiger moved away from Thakurs body. On being informed by villagers, Uke rushed to the spot with his team and removed the body from the scene for post mortem. The tiger had broken Thakurs neck and ripped open his chest. We have paid ex-gratia sum of Rs 25,000 to the kin of Thakur. Mendade has been moved to hospital for treatment, Uke said. Senior forest officials of Central Chanda forest division and FDCM visited the place and inspected the scene. A tiger had earlier killed one Sunita Chitarlewar in FDCM Jharan range on February 17. Uke, however, claimed that Chitarlewar and Thakur were killed by different tigers. The woman was killed in compartment no. 90-B, while Thakur was killed in compartment no. 120. Both areas have presence of separate tigers, he said. Predators have killed five humans in the district in separate incidents over the last two-and-a-half-months. source: toi.
