Whats on my mind? First of all I wanted to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday - it was a great one, preceded by two nights of great music. The combination of good music, good friends and good food is hard to beat. Second, I wanted to thank the people who voted for me, who worked on my campaign, who contributed to it, or who just said good things to their friends and neighbors about my work. I really appreciate everything you did to make my election possible and Im looking forward to continuing to work with you, to listen to you and to serve you. Your support is the real proof that a candidate can win without big corporate donors, that having the most money doesnt mean you get the most votes and that putting the community interest first matters to voters. Im truly honored that you have elected me to serve you and finishing first is nice too. I wish this were a happier time - Im sure that many of you share my disappointment at the State and National election outcomes. I firmly believe that government can do good, but sadly we elected far too many people who dont think government should do anything but lay out a red carpet for Wall Street and our 21st century Robber Barons. For most of the last eight years, weve contended with a struggling economy that hampered our ability to provide resources for things we need and for things we should be doing. It was a man-made disaster. Now we face a second man-made disaster where the lack of resources could be exacerbated by political decisions at higher levels that could further handicap our efforts locally. I hope that we do not go down that road, but Im also a realist. Were going to be challenged to look within ourselves and our community to find solutions even if we dont have full partners. But Im hopeful that this Council and the Executive will manage whatever adversity we face with the same focused effort that we brought to bear when the economy was melting down. We have a great community and a caring community and it makes me proud to say I live in Montgomery County. We will get through this and Im certain that well be working together.
