Whats on your mind?Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season. Labour Hold Their Nerve To Steel Title While Baili Stall Against The Horse. The final week of League games for the 2013/14 Season of the Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League provided a tension built finale with fortunes changing hands as nerves played a vital part, form books were ripped up and thrown out the window and the darting gods conspirered to crush hopes and dreams in one dramatic last twist of fate. After a long exciting, hard, dramatic season the league positions were settled, or were they, as drama twists and turns fuelled an unbelievable night of non stop high octane action that makes the sport of darts great and the Merthyr & District Darts League simply the BEST. Merthyr Football Club Seaside “C” 8 v Mount Peasant Inn 1. Having already won a re-arranged match versus Heolgerrig Club earlier in the evening by the same 8-1 score line the Football Club “Seaside” hoped the tide would still flow in their favour in their quest to steal third place from the Grawen Arms but hoping to kick sand in their face were the Mt. Pleasant Inn who were out to end their season with a win following an up and down campaign this time around. The Football Club kicked off by taking the opening pairs game against the throw with Dale Pinch 2x100 & Justin Davies 100,140 overcoming the stiff challenge of Karl Manns 100,140 & D. Phelps for an early lead. The Mt hit back immediately in the second pairs with Derek Dobbins 100 & Bobby Terrett shocking Craig Morgan 100,140 & Steve Thomas 100,116 against the darts to level at one apiece. The last of the pairs games saw another leg go against the darts as Kerry Morgan 2x100 & Jamie Evans 100,140 took the honours to give the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the all important singles matches . Jamie Evans produced the first hold of throw in the first singles game hitting 3x100, 121,2x140 to beat Karl Manns 2x100,140 and increase the lead to 3-1. A second leg “bye” saw the score advance to 4-1 before a young man with a bright future Steve Thomas 5x140 beat D. Phelps 100, 2x140 to make it a comfortable 5-1. Dynamite Dale Pinch 3x100, 140 advanced the score onto 6-1 with a fine win over D. Williams. Grand Finals Singles Semi-Finalists Justin Davies 2x100, 123, 180 warmed up for Fridays event with a great win over Derek Dobbins 125,137 and in the final game of the night Craig Morgan 3x100,132 beat Bobby Terrett 100 against the darts to take the match by an emphatic 8-1 score, and with results elsewhere going their way third place in the league along with it. Lord Raglan “B” 7 v Troedyrhiw Ex Club 2. Troedyrhiw Ex made their final trip of the season and suffered another heavy defeat in a season that they have really struggled to get to grips with their game and be glad to see the back of and will hope to regroup in division two next season. Viv Morgan 3x100 & Brian Roberts took the opening pairs against the darts for the home side with Glen Kitchen & G. Butler100 in action for the visitors. Dean Barnett & Gavin Nicholls 100 apiece made it 2-0 with a hold of throw over veterans Tony Hedges 100 & Graham Price and 3-0 then appeared in the wins column for the Lord with Brian Meek & Gary Hughes taking the darts off Tony Galliers & Gary Champion as the teams headed into the singles battles. The Ex-Terminator Tony Galliers finally got the away side into the game with a fine win over Gary Hughes against the throw in the first singles and then yet another game against the darts saw Viv Morgan 100,122,135,140 beat Gary Champion 2x100,125 to give the home side a healthy 4-1 lead. Dean Barnett has had an excellent season back in the Merthyr League playing for the Lord B and he continued his fine form hitting 3x100,140 in a fine win over the hard to beat Glen Kitchen 100 . G. Butler held throw for a fine win over Gavin Nicholls to reduce the visitors arrears but back came their hosts with Brian Roberts 137 getting the better of Tony Hedges. The final game was a keenly fought encounter with Brian Meek 100,125 just getting the better of Graham Price 2x100,121,135 as the Lord finished with a fine win while the Ex were just glad to wave goodbye to this particular season. Baili-Glas Inn “B” 3 v Horse & Groom 6. The Baili went into this match three points clear of their nearest rivals the defending champions at the Merthyr Labour Club and knew that a steady error free game would see them wrestle away the title and be crowned champions. Sounds easy on paper and in talk but where it matters, on the dartboard, a very different scenario was played out. Pairs semi-finalists at this week’s Grand Finals, Matthew Quinlan & Steve Haman were up first for the Baili but they lost out against the darts to Wayne Titcombe & Steve Colvin and then a double dip hit the home side as Andrew Rough & Mervyn Matthews lost out to Steve Nicholas & Steve Thomas, another pair who will showcase their talents at the Grand Finals as the Horse got a whole neck in front. Former Singles and Pairs Champions Geraint Thomas & Jeff Pearce, who will be out to regain their pairs title at the Grand Finals, were next up for the home side and when they crashed out to Phil Williams & Brian Nicholas the Baili boys knew they were in trouble and needed to get into the game and fast. Jeff Pearce from the Baili held throw over current Summer League Singles Champion Phil Williams to finally get the Baili buzzing but this was reduced quickly to a distant hum as Steve Nicholas warmed up for the Grand Finals with a win over Mervyn Matthews to make it 4-1 in the Horse’s favour as the teams entered the final furlongs of the season. The normally reliable Steve Haman faced Brian Nicholas in the next game and in a closely fought battle the Horse jockey took the game making it 5-1 to the visitors and leave the Baili’s title ambitions relying on results elsewhere. Wayne Titcombe was in fine form for the Horse in the next game scoring a great win over Matthew Quinlan and effectively ending the Baili’s title aspirations for another season. Andrew Rough maintained his never say die never give in attitude in the eighth game to beat Steve Thomas and Baili captain Geraint Thomas did his bit for what was now a lost cause in the final game by beating Steve Colvin against the darts . Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 5 v Heolgerrig Social Club 4. The Guest “A” bid farewell to their first taste of life at the top table with a hard fought win over the visiting Heolgerrig Social Club who had earlier suffered a crushing defeat at the Football Club C. Mike Evans & Iory Haines 100 apiece held throw to take the opening pairs leg over Mark Virgin & Mike Martin but the home side were quick to reply with A. Benbow & C. Powell 127 getting the better of Trad Davies 2x100 & Meirion Evans. A first break of throw in the final pairs saw Wayne Benbow & Mark Benbow 100 apiece nudge the home side ahead with a fine win over Colin Morgan & Bob Watkins just ahead of the singles battles. Mark Benbow 2x100,140 held throwin the first singles to beat Gary Watkins 100 by a 2-0 margin and increase the lead to 3-1 but back came Heolgerrig through the vastly experienced Iory Haines 2x100,140 who scored a fine 2-0 win over Mike Martin 125. Colin Morgan 2x100 levelled the match beating A. Benbow 2x100,125 but parity was brief as Mark Virgin beat Meirion Evans 140 against the darts to put the Bowls Club back into the lead at 4-3. Wonderful Wayne Benbow 100,139,140 held throw to beat Bob Watkins 2x100 making it 5-3 to the hosts before Trad Davies 100 won the last game of the night for the visitors with a 2-0 win over C. Powell 100. Grawen Arms 4 v Merthyr Labour Club 5. The Labour Club trailed the Baili B by three points going into the final game of the season and could have easily been forgiven for taking their off the ball in this game knowing they had an early start and long trip ahead of them the following day as they travelled up north to play in the final of the prestigious CIU Cup hoping to be the first Merthyr side to lift that title. Wayne Davies & David Rowlands 100 apiece put all thoughts of “tomorrow” out of their heads as they took the first pairs leg over Phil Locke 100,140 & Darren Locke 100 for an early lead but it was soon 1-1 with Peter Locke 100 & Scott Bayliss 140 getting the better of Gareth Dunn 3x100 & Jason Baynham 100. Anthony Carstairs 2x140 & Ron Morgan 140 then gave the Labour Club the upper hand going into the singles with a fine victory over Marcus Davies 2x100 & Wayne Gutty. Peter Locke 6x100,140 levelled the match with victory in the first singles over Kevin Mahoney 2x100 but the Labour lads were quick to regain the lead with David Rowlands 3x100, 140 edging past Phil Locke 2x100,121. Young Scott Bayliss 100,134,137,140,180 who’s had an excellent first season with the Grawen kept up his form with a great win over Anthony Carstairs 100,2x140,180 to level at 3-3 and just as the pressure looked to tell on the faces of the visitors Wayne Davies 2x100, 121 put his side back ahead with a win over Wayne Gutty and in a hard fought eighth game Ron Morgan 100 nipped past Darren Locke to unknowingly for him at the time turn the tables at the top of the league and win the title for the Labour Club. Marcus Davies 2x100 took the final game of the match with victory over Gareth Dunn 100. Division Two. Morlais Tavern “A” 3 v Baili-Glas Inn “A” 8. Missed double after missed double have cost the Baili A dear all season and put them in the pressure situation going into the final game knowing only a big win and results elsewhere going their way would give them any hope of grabbing second spot and promotion back to division one at the first attempt. The missed doubles curse struck again in the first triples as the Baili trio failed to find a double allowing the Morlais to nip in and win the leg with I. Evans 100 finding the target. Terry Morgan 100 & Co suffered in the second game as a good lead disappeared allowing Ian Laing 120 & Ralph Roberts with a 132 out to steal the leg and put the hosts 2-0 ahead. The away side now faced an uphill battle but stuck to their guns with Nigel Meek & Terry Morgan snatching the first pairs over Ian Laing 120 & Jason Gillespie to get the Baili into the game and when Alan Mee 100 & Cled Jones broke the throw of P.Thomas & I. Evans to level at 2-2 hopes rose of a miracle for the Baili. Nigel Bees 125 & Ralph Roberts 2x100 then broke throw in the final pairs beating Andrew Morgan & Tim Charleston to give the home side a 3-2 lead going into the singles. Nigel Meek 100 beat P. Thomas to level the match and with Wayne Smalldon 100 beating Jason Gillespie 100 in the second singles to give the Baili the lead for the first time a fresh step came to the visitors. Alan Mee 2x100 delivered a quick one two over Ian Laing to put the visitors 5-3 ahead and 6-3 then followed with Tiger Terry Morgan 180 beating Ralph Roberts 100,140 in a thriller. Captain Cled 100,117 made it 7-3 with a fine win over I. Evans before Tim Charleston made it six out of six in the singles with victory over Nigel Bees 100 for a superb 8-3 win but ultimately the missed doubles would cost dear as they missed promotion by one point. Aberfan Social “A” 7 v Martyrs Club 4. Both these sides also had an outside chance of promotion but in a cut throat game and with results elsewhere not helping their cause they will again face each other in division two next season. The home side started well taking the first triples against the darts with Warren Rees 100,Ken Davies 140 & Phil Green 140 finding their range as did Matthew Phillips125 & Colin Howe 140 for the visitors. The home side also added the second triples as well with Lloyd Davies 100 & Peter Emmanuel 121 finding the target with Ray Phillips 140, D. Howe125 & Peter Worrell 135 replying for the Martyrs. The home side continued their attack in the opening pairs game with Kevin Downing 100 & Charles Davies 100,104 out beating Peter Worrell & Roy Phillips and 4-0 soon appeared with Warren Rees & Josh O’Keefe holding throw to beat Keith Evans & Alun Pearce. Matthew Phillips & Colin Howe 100 finally got the visitors into the game with a hard fought win over Lloyd Davies & Phil Green 100 to trail by three going into the singles. Peter Worrell 2x100 cut the deficit further with victory over Lloyd Davies in the first singles but the fight back was then cut short as Kevin Downing 100,140 made it 5-2 with victory over Alun Pearce. Colin Howe beat Warren Rees 100 to pull a third leg back for the Martyrs before a fine game from Peter Emmanuel 125 108 out saw him beat Roy Phillips 100,116 to make it 6-3 favour. Matthew Phillips 121,140 beat Charles Davies to earn the away side a fourth point before Ken Davies 100 sealed a fine win for the home side with a win over Keith Evans 140. Division Three.
