Whats the secret to getting higher rankings in Google? By now youve probably realized that the answer is NOT: keep your site updated with fresh, quality content. The truth is: Theres no secret society that rewards you with #1 rankings for publishing on a regular basis. Thats not how SEO works. For better or for worse, SEO is still all about BACKLINKS. Despite the buzz about social signals, BACKLINKS are what rank sites today. And considering that BACKLINKS have been the foundation of Googles empire from day 1, I seriously doubt that Google will abandon them anytime soon. In fact, a Google engineer (Matt Cutts) recently went on the record to say that Google plans on using BACKLINKS as a primary ranking signal for the near and distant future: https//youtube/watch?v=NCY30WhI2og OK I think I can stop putting BACKLINKS in all caps now.
