What’s Growing in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden? This week in grade 3 the students were busy looking after their worm farms, separating worm castings and liquid for use on the garden and planting seedlings. We have been learning about the Islamic celebration of Ramadan where Muslims fast for 30 days (during daylight hours) in honour of their faith. At the end of Ramadan they celebrate for three days, called Eid-ul-Fitr with families and food. In the kitchen we celebrated with Pakoras (fried cauliflower), vegetable samosas, pumpkin wantons and African sweet rice balls. You can find the SAKG recipes to try at home on our Osborne website. We appreciate the time and support of these wonderful parents… 3F: Debora Thomas, Gail Byatt, Karen Tyndall, Vanessa Sands and Ruth Patton 3OH: desperately in need of helpers 3Q: Joanne Tighe …desperately in need of helpers 3B: Deidre, Glenn, Michelle and Melissa It’s never too late to come and help out in our garden or kitchen sessions. We need about 4 helpers for the kitchen in each class. We would love your support and your kids would love to see you there. See your child’s teacher for days/times. 3F created acrostic poems about the SAKG garden… Gardening is so much fun Astonishing little creatures Rustling luscious green leaves Dazzling shining warm sun Even if it’s raining Nothing can make the garden not fun. By Willow Gross garden grubs And earthworms in the soil Ripe delicious food Disgusting muddy dirt Every garden session is fun Never ending fun. By Jack Great garden An apple blossom in the tree Ripe radishes rustling in the wind Delightful flowers in the dirt Earthworms are excellent Nothing is nicer than nature By Bella 30H wrote about the life of a worm from a worms eye view… I woke up this morning and there was red in my eyes. A rotten human had arrived! I felt in a scared mood… and the ground was gone. Wehave been taken to a table. What? That’s odd. Lots of humans but kids. Those silly old kids will kill us! But wait, they did not kill us. Instead of killing us, they were cleaning out our worm juices and castings. We were happy to see a little smile on the lettuces face, as they were being watered with our worm juices.Ella D Through the dark soft soil the lid got lifted off the worm farm with big human hands. I didn’t know what was going to happen to me. I could feel the sun so I dug down but I banged into the table. It hurt my head. They didn’t hurt us they helped us get out of the old soil and put us in the fresh food in the worm farm. I ate all the food scraps munching and crunching those scraps. Tara On a random day some random children came. I was watching them read a book about me and my friends. After that they got into groups, the first group were doing stuff with my wee like mixing it with water and my poo. The other group did some planting and weeding. I was entertained and wished I was a human because that looked so fun and the teacher knew a lot about us and planting. I liked how they were working as a team and being nice to each other and I also liked how helpful the teacher was. Then they had to go but then a girl came to me and said bye bye. Charlie
