“What’s New in County 22?” Lately at the sheriff’s - TopicsExpress

“What’s New in County 22?” Lately at the sheriff’s office we have been conducting interviews for Jail Administrator. The Jail Administrator will be in charge of planning, directing, assigning, supervising and coordinating all staff and activities of the jail and dispatch center. This will be a management position under the sheriff. Other counties do have this position and it works well for them so I decided to install one here. The Jail Administrator works directly under the Sheriff, like the Chief Deputy, and should have thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of modern penology and criminology. We are inspected once every year by the Chief Jail Inspector in the State of Iowa for the Iowa Department of Corrections. If there are too many violations the Chief Jail Inspector could shut down the jail. We haven’t had any issues here and actually get strong comments from the Jail Inspector during his visits. On the deputy side of the office we recently promoted two Sergeants. Their duties include reviewing case files and case work of assigned deputies for completion and accuracy, fielding and addressing initial needs, complaints and concerns from deputies, monitoring work load and performance and training needs or wants. The Chief Deputy oversees the deputies, Civil Deputy, Investigators and Sergeants. Detailed monthly evaluations are conducted and reports given to the Chief Deputy who in turn, reports to the Sheriff so we can closely monitor accountability and give commendations where commendations are due. I had a gentleman call me the other day inquiring about an alarm system for his weekend get-away residence because he had heard there was a burglary near it. The best thing I can advise you is to check with your local telephone companies first. They may offer some sort of alarm systems for you at a reasonable cost. There are other companies out there and most of them work by calling our office or the company’s dispatcher who then contacts our office to send an officer. If you have any questions, or comments, feel free to contact me anytime, e-mail me, or stop by to see me. Thanks and be safe, Sheriff Mike Tschirgi
