Wheatley Blue 1 Stingers 9 Stingers travelled to Wheatley for their second game of the weekend this morning. The omens were good, Wheatley were near the bottom of the table & the inspirational Reece Finley returned to the starting line up to attempt his comeback from injury once more. Harry Linley made the step up from the U11s to provided much needed cover on the bench. Mother nature had cranked the heating up a notch & the pitch was in good condition as Wheatley got the game underway. Stingers showed no hangover from their efforts 24 hours earlier as they started brightly, Alex Young feeding Ryan Chappell early on but the attack fizzled out without an effort on the Wheatley goal. It took just 6 minutes for stingers to break the deadlock, that man REECE FINLEY finishing from a tight angle after being slipped through by Will Weir. Wheatley pushed forward & won themselves a corner, the ever-improving Tyler Wilkinson showed great hands, plucking the ball out of the air with ease. Reece threatened down the right once more, finding Will with a clever cut-back, Will`s effort cleared the crossbar. Ryan & Alex were next to threaten, once again on the same wavelength, Alex`s shot was well saved. On 14 minutes Stingers were further ahead, Archie Taylor finding himself on the right hand by-line. A clever chip over the keeper may have found the net anyway but an unfortunate Wheatley defender could do nothing more than head it home for an OWN GOAL. Archie was unlucky moments later, hitting a first-time half-volley from the halfway line which was just too heavy for Reece to get onto. REECE soon claimed his second of the morning, somehow finding half a yard of space in a crowded penalty area to finish with his left foot this time, the scoreboard ticking over nicely at 0-3. James Taylor then put Reece in again but the defender did well to force him wide this time, the move ending with Archie firing over. Wheatley then found a brief respite with a flurry forward, Stingers very nearly profited with a quick counter, earning themselves a corner. James` delivery was headed just wide by Reece at the far post. The hosts rallied again with a quick break, the striker`s effort was well over with Cameron Denby closing in quickly with 4 minutes of the first half remaining. A minute later & Stingers burst forward again, a great ball over the top from Cameron sent James & Reece racing forward. James opted to leave it for REECE, who made no mistake to make it 0-4. Reece very nearly repaid the compliment in the next forage forward, playing in James who shot just wide. HT Wheatley Blue 0 Stingers 4 Stingers re-shuffled at the break, Cameron Denby pushed forward into midfield with Harry Linley taking his place at centre back after looking comfortable at right back. With just 5 minutes played, James exchanged passes with Cameron before finding ALEX YOUNG with a great driven cross. Alex tapped home with ease, a deserved reward for his hard work. Moments later & James nearly provided him with another with a ball swung into the far post, Alex`s header saved this time. Wheatley managed to get on the score sheet with the next attack, a toe-poked effort from 15 yards beating Tyler to reduce the arrears at 1-5. Stingers responded, James having a shot blocked well by the onrushing keeper as Archie played him in. From the half clearance a lurking Cameron Denby fired an effort against the bar from 20 yards as Wheatley survived this attack. The woodwork would rattle again shortly after, Archie`s short corner hit on the half-volley by the plucky James Taylor, his effort curled a fraction too much & bounced away to safety off the upright. Not to be discouraged, he showed a great turn moments later & hit another screamer that flashed wide of the far post with the keeper rooted to the spot. His purple patch continued, a one two executed with Archie this time, his cross finding RYAN CHAPPELL who showed great feet to buy himself enough space to fire home with his left peg. Wheatley pressed for another goal, Tyler & Luke Keeble showing great determination to block their path, Luke`s head coming off second best to Tyler`s knee, ending a great weekend for him. The versatile James filled in at left back, his third position of the morning. Wheatley then shot wide before RYAN made it 7-1, more great work on the right providing him with a simple tap-in at the back post. Ryan continued to torment, playing a clever ball square to ALEX YOUNG who found the top corner to claim his second & Stingers` eighth. The morning finished as it started, after being rested for much of the second half, REECE FINLEY came back on & completed the rout with 2 minutes left. After a tough game the previous day, Stingers` Michael Chappell commented There was no such thing as an easy game today, full credit to the lads for a massive shift this weekend.
