When Barnes & Noble first came to Nashua NH, I was very excited - TopicsExpress

When Barnes & Noble first came to Nashua NH, I was very excited — a big, open bookstore, with large sections on music (two large shelves on opera alone), science, gardening, cookery, literature, poetry, history, biography… I got a Barnes & Noble card, and went there frequently. Good intentions all around, I suppose. After todays excursion, Im never going back. Over the years, the café has expanded, and the music section has shrunk away… About 5-10 percent of the books are for Dummies. I may not be all that smart, but I refuse to buy a book for Dummies. I suppose one could credit them for honesty. Then, there is the large section for whoever Bill OReilly is killing at the moment — Patton, Lincoln, Kennedy… Wazzup, Bill? Psychology (aka self-help — does it ever work?), Graphic Novels, Christian fiction, Teen Fantasy, Bodice Rippers, Music (i.e. books about people who grimace and dont wear shirts), etc. There is a Curt Cobain section. The store is just as big as before, but today I had a hard time finding anything that didnt directly insult my admittedly limited intelligence. After a visit on the way home to the pet store for kat fud, and Costco for bird seed and paper towels, I never want to leave the house again. I dont want to be a snob. But, God its depressing. Everything I love and live for seems to be on life-support these days. Do people really feel edified by all this?
