When DTG (direct-to-garment) printing is described as full color I - TopicsExpress

When DTG (direct-to-garment) printing is described as full color I feel like the reader is cheated because this is NOT true. Fluorescent colors, metallic colors, bright colors, or anything that does not fall within the tiny CMYK range is not printable using this method. The human visible spectrum is much greater than CMYK. This can be fixed, but the digital printer manufacturers are not willing to tackle the problem. As a designer who uses bright colors frequently, I hope manufacturers will eventually build more flexible printing equipment with better color fidelity, and new graphic file standards to easily transmit these very popular design choices. Designers, not printer manufacturers, should determine what is printable and how. Of course we can utilize analog printing methods to achieve these colors but why must we be hindered by cost: screens, plates, separations and the rest of it? The technology to do this must exist. We should find whoever is maintaining the status quo regarding the available garment printing technologies and kick them out.
