When Great Britain decided to establish a large penal colony in - TopicsExpress

When Great Britain decided to establish a large penal colony in Australia, they gathered up the convicts they wanted to export and shipped them off in a fleet that was simply known as The First Fleet. Not terribly creative, I know, but I guess they figured, why hire the advertising geniuses of Madison Avenue to focus-group and test-market a name for a penal colony? So they just called them The First Fleet, and sent them on their way. Well, on this day in 1788, The First Fleet began to arrive in Botany Bay. Escort ship HMS Supply landed first, on January 19, and then the other escort ship, the six convict transport ships, and the three food and supply ships all landed over the following couple of days. In this print, we see the fleet beginning to arrive. Wonder if anybody was there to put the shrimp on the barbie to welcome them all ashore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Fleet
