When I first decided to become a professional songwriter I had no idea how the business side of it worked. Then I attended my first Songwriters Symposium in Austin, TX. I attended workshops where professionals from Nashville taught us about licensing and publishing. I learned how professional songwriters make a living. Theres also songwriting workshops where you can learn stuff like alternate tunings for your guitar, tips on finding the right lyrics and even performance tips. These workshops are taught by some of the most successful songwriters in Nashville. The Austin Songwriters Group puts this Symposium together every January. This will be my third one and I cant wait. During the day you can pitch your songs to Nashville publishers or attend classes and after supper everyone gathers in the hotel lobby to form picking circles. Last year I was in a picking circle with Chuck Cannon, Austin Cunningham, Debby Throckmorton, Robert Josef Cross, David D. Stewart, Chris Cernosek, Katya Lalli-Butera and a few others. We played until the wee hours and then got up the next day and went to more classes and pitched to more publishers. It is such a blast. If you are a songwriter or if you like hanging out with songwriters come to the Symposium. Go to austinsongwritersgroup/ for details. I sure hope to see you there!
