When I first saw a picture of Cream back when I was a kid, my first reaction was wheres the other guys?, as I was used to bands with 4 or 5 guys like The Beatles and The Stones. This was my first indication that there might be something different going on with these guys, and once I heard them, I wasnt disappointed, although it took me years to figure out just what the hell they were actually doing! I once remember reading an interview with Eric Clapton who said something to the effect of that he always considered Cream to be Jack Bruces band, and that it was apparent from their first rehearsal that he (Eric) didnt have what it took to be in it! ….what an imagination that man had! And who could disagree? Apart from the Cream hits like Tales Of Brave Ullyses, White Room etc, there were also solo songs like Rope Ladder To The Moon & Theme From An Imaginary Western which were covered by Colosseum and Mountain, and many other barking mad songs with titles to match courtesy of his partner Pete Brown. I mean, who writes stuff like that? Years later, Jack and Ginger Baker sat in with the band on The David Letterman Show, playing the inevitable Cream numbers at their customary bone crushing volume, and while I certainly felt for poor old Sid McGuinness who even though a fine guitar player in his own right, must have been sweating as he gamely attempted to be Clapton for a night, I was amazed at how much of that famous Cream sound came from Jack. One of those rare there it is! moments. R.I.P. Jack Bruce https://youtube/watch?v=pwDo0JUeKqM
