When I first started working in 1996, the California minimum wage - TopicsExpress

When I first started working in 1996, the California minimum wage was $4.25 an hour and gas cost 99 cents a gallon. Now, the California minimum wage is $9 an hour (a 212 percent increase) and gas costs about $3.90 per gallon (a 394 percent increase). Since the cost of living is very closely tied to the price of gas, and increases in the minimum wage are NOT a good indicator of how much average wages are increasing, since the only people who tend to get raises when that happens are those who are working for minimum wage, we can see pretty clearly that the cost of living is going up a hell of a lot faster than wages are.
