When I found out I got the role of Crystal Burset on ORANGE IS THE - TopicsExpress

When I found out I got the role of Crystal Burset on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK last summer, my agent told me ‘you’re a hair salon owner and wife of a transgendered inmate whose home is in foreclosure and is disowned by her family. Your first episode will be directed by Jodie Foster and itll stream on Netflix. Great part, huh?’ ‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘I’m gonna be playing a hairdresser! For the last 2 years, I have been quietly working on a project called HAIRiette of HARLEM, an interactive web series about a woman named Hairiette Arms who learns to navigate her sad, funny life via her relationship with….her natural hair! Thats right: Her. Hair. The unique part of the show is that the audience gets to co-create the events of Hairiettes life and whatever they decide will be written into the next weeks storyline. Well also launch a haircare line, where a portion of the proceeds will go to the Actors Fund, a 130 year old human services organization that helps entertainment professionals in crisis, need or transition. The Actors Fund came to my aid when I struggled to make ends meet in my early days as an actor--I am humbled, honored and grateful to be able to support their efforts in this way and to give back. Weve launched a fundraising campaign to raise $50,000 to produce HAIRiette of HARLEM (the interactive series) and the haircare line. Please consider making a donation TODAY-- we have great, fun rewards at every level from $10 to $10,000! Every day starting February 24th at 11:11AM EST (it is said that the angels sing at this time!) until April 10 (the remaining days of our rocket hub fundraising campaign), I will share one essay from my upcoming book I FOUND GOD IN MY HAIR: 98 spiritual principles I learned from my relationship with…my hair! (via FACEBOOK TANYA WRIGHT and Twitter: @tanyaTTwright, @HAIRietteharlem). As with all things that give you struggle, my hair has taught me a lot about life, love…and FAITH. It is my hope you will find inspiration in these essays to apply to your own life. Click the link below to view a fun video about HAIRiette of HARLEM! Thank you for supporting this innovative project that fuses creativity with technology and supporting our efforts to help make the world a better place: one hair at a time.
