When I heard two families scheduled to travel on AirAsias Flight 8501 had not been on the plane, I KNEW those families would now make careless and hurtful remarks about how God had protected them. What, God didnt bother to protect the others, and thats why they died? Dont people who make such remarks realize how damaging they are, and how such words dishonor the unlucky? The implicit assumption that survivors were more deserving of Gods care than others is profoundly offensive to the families of those whom God let die. Its gentler and wiser to acknowledge chance and happenstance when chance and happenstance are the major players. When my daughter was killed, some parents condolences included the sentiment: There but for the grace of God . . . I said nothing, but the suggestion that God played a role in my daughters death, that God granted their child grace while withholding grace from mine was deeply, deeply wounding.
