When I learned of Dr. Maya Angelou’s passing, I had to catch my breath for a moment. There are many great women who have left indelible imprints on me, but she was one of a kind...one of those rare people who made your soul expand, who somehow made you more you. For me, Dr. Maya Angelou was and will always be MAJESTIC. A poet, dancer, singer, director, professor, author and activist, this incredible woman fully expressed herself on every level. There was no “box” that could contain her, nor stereotype that could explain her away. She truly lived, releasing every creative gift and God-given talent inside of her. She refused to let anything diminish her right to shine, and by watching her, I found courage to do the same. PhenomenalMag is named for and rooted in Dr. Angelou’s poem, “Phenomenal Woman.” By celebrating every captivating detail about herself, she opened our eyes to our own magnificence. She taught us to see, love, respect and express ourselves as the remarkable masterpieces that we are. When we recite her poem, her words wrap us more exquisitely than the finest couture and illuminate us from within. Because of her, we have learned to proudly proclaim our beauty. Though releasing her hurts, I cannot help but smile. The once-caged bird has completed her earthly flight and traveled on to a well-deserved paradise. Thank you, dear Dr. Maya, for everything. We love you forever!
