When I started Little Flower in 1962, Sr. Agustin was the Principal; Sr. Mary Evangeline taught 1st Grade; Sr. Mary Thomasina taught 2d Grade; and Sr. Mary Lelia taught 3rd Grade (a position she may have held for a hundred years before me). Gilbert Velasquez and John Atiee were my best friends. My circle of friends included Manny Flores, Dewey Cameron, Gary DiPietro, Maurice Ortiz, Joey OConn, Daniel Garza, Tony Acevedo and Peter Acevedo (cousins), Mark Schwartz (sp?). Tony Acevedo was killed in an accident--he was hiding in a box in the alley behind his home and a truck ran over him. I had schoolboy crushes on Diana Gonzalez and Diane Flores. Rose Ann Pena was amazing with crayons. In 2nd Grade, I proposed to Sr. Thomasina during reading circle, while sitting in her lap. She said, I cant; Im married to Jesus, and showed me her wedding band. I said, Thats Okay. Hes dead. She politely removed me from her lap. I remember drills during the Cuban Missile crisis that involved going to the Fallout Shelter in the basement of the Church. The Fire Department would regularly test emergency sirens to warn us if we were about to be bombed.
