When I turned 50, I received an unexpected gift. I discovered that, when I looked back over my life, I could see, for the first time, that a story had been unfolding all along. It had all the ups and downs, drama and disappointments, sorrows and joys and surprises of a well-crafted play. And it all made sense! And I realized I wouldnt have changed a word of it even if I could have! In the years that have followed, the story has continued and, in my better moments, Im able to see it for what it is. Last night, I was undeniably disappointed and even discouraged, feeling much like a stranger in a strange land. But this morning, I can see this election, and all of them for that matter, as just another chapter in the unfolding story of our nation. I can see that this episode, and all that comes with it, will pass in time like they all do. I hope that, eventually, my own life will tell a story of a guy who, sometimes against the odds, kept on going, growing, learning, changing and trying to become a wiser, more compassionate, more generous, more understanding person. I truly believe that, eventually, we together will tell a story where we the people, sometimes against the odds, kept on going, growing, learning, changing and trying to create a wiser, more compassionate, more generous, more understanding nation, a nation where liberty and justice for all has been transformed from a vision into a reality firmly established in our hearts, in our minds, in our laws and in our land.
