When I used to my column for the Sunday Sun, this was 1 of my favs I wrote, a story about a little Irishman I met & what he said changed my life...hope u enjoy it! LIFE is funny, isn’t it? I was in the Britannia Pub in Santa Monica about a 1 year ago (3 year ago) and somehow got speaking to a little Irishman. (I know this sounds like it’s turning into another one of my jokes but it’s not.) What this man said to me really changed my whole way of thinking and I guess my life for that matter. He was very well dressed in what looked like an expensive suit, i would say in his mid 40s. I was asking him why he was there and what he was doing. He was very secretive, telling me he would stay here for a month, fly to Australia for a couple of months and never go back to Ireland. I could have thought he had done something back in Ireland he was trying to get away from, seemed very dodgy. You could tell he was very wise and very street smart. He was asking about why I was in Los Angeles. I told him the story about how I was pro boxer and trained in LA, loved the place and had applied for my Green Card. I also told him about my Olympic success getting a bronze medal, saying I was very lucky. He stopped me immediately and with a very serious face and said: “Theres no such thing as luck. How are you lucky?” I replied I had a cracked rib at the Olympics, and had a walk over my 1st fight wish give me a few extra days to prepare. I could have been drawn against the Chinaman who won gold first, but never did. He said: “Let me tell you something, lad. In life you make your own luck. “How did you even get to the Olympics? By training and working hard all those years. “Anything you do in life is because of yourself. Everyone wants to win the lottery but not everyone puts it on. You’re making your own luck by putting it on. “One bit of advice I can give you is take every opportunity that comes your way, which by the sounds of it you have been doing. It may not work out but if you don’t try it you will never get the end result – success.” I’ve thought about his words so much over time and he is completely right! Thinking like this really helps me and I’m very confident a mindset like this will help me become successful. I’ve looked even deeper into this sort of thing and know a lot more about it now. People may think this is silly but I know it helps me and if it doesn’t then what’s the harm in trying? Like the little Irish guy said, “Just do it. If it helps, great, if it doesn’t so what? now the way i think is if your not happy with something in your life ,like the way its going make a change! weather it be your career , partner or what ever, dont complain about it , change it, you only live once. It may take a year or 5 year to get to be to where you want to be and you have got to do it. In my boxing career i was earning well over a 6 figure salary and went from that to teaching boxing for $6 a hour in LA this was very hard for me to do, especially because i had money in the bank and own a quite few of properties in UK, but i knew i had swallow my pride and i was starting at the bottom after i retired from competing and the money stopped coming in, i was going to work my way to the top and now its going great after just over 2 year Living in USA im about to open my 2nd gym. Im still not on the salary i was on but the goal is to pass that. One quote that really has helped change my life thatI want to share with you is from a book called “Who stole my cheese?” I recommend you read it. The quote is: “What would you do if you where not afraid?” Think about it.
