When I was 11 we went to visit my dads family in Denmark. At the beach (aka a dock in a stretch of sand by the side of the road), I saw a woman that looked exactly like this. She stripped down butt ass naked and then proceeded with her swim. My mouth hung open like a barn door. I then made myself as small as I could and changed into my red one piece in the back seat. My shock made me no less embarrassed of my 11 year old body, you see. I have no doubt, NOW, that knowing this about the world has impacted how I feel about bodies. Having a perspective other than the American one cracked the cultural assumptions I had absorbed over my life. Wanna have a bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. Or better yet, go butt ass neked. In other news, while swimming at that beach, I flung what I thought was a hair net at my sister. Turns out it was a jellyfish. Turns out they have actually deadly jellyfish at that beach. Woops.
