“When I was a boy, my father, a baker, introduced me to the wonders of song,” tenor Luciano Pavarotti relates. “He urged me to work very hard to develop my voice. Arrigo Pola, a professional tenor in my hometown of Modena, Italy, took me as a pupil. I also enrolled in a teachers college. On graduating, I asked my father, ‘Shall I be a teacher or a singer?’ ‘Luciano,’ my father replied, ‘if you try to sit on two chairs, you will fall between them. For life, you must choose one chair.’ “I chose one. It took seven years of study and frustration before I made my first professional appearance. It took another seven to reach the Metropolitan Opera. And now I think whether it’s laying bricks, writing a book--whatever we choose--we should give ourselves to it. Commitment, thats the key. Choose one chair.” Focus is an important virtue. We will achieve nothing significant in life without it. Focus, by definition is “to concentrate on something and pay particular attention to it.” To lack focus is to have your attention divided. In 2 Kings 2, Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s anointing. The fulfilment of his assignment, to a large extent, depended on this. How did Elijah respond to this request? “So he said, ‘You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.’” In other words, for Elisha to receive a double portion of Elijah’s anointing, he would have to pay attention to Elijah, eschewing every distraction. The question today is, what is your assignment in life? What are your goals? How much attention are you paying to fulfilling them? More importantly, do you know you cannot effectively fulfil these goals without the anointing of Holy Ghost? Then how much attention are you paying to the Holy Spirit? Today, make a fresh commitment to pay attention. Refuse the temptation to disperse your physical, mental and spiritual energies in different directions. Isolate the assignments God has entrusted to you and focus on the Holy Spirit to empower you accomplish them. Today, be ruthless with distractions. Pay attention! - Pastor Taiwo
