When I was a child living in Freckleton I used to lie down in cornfields and meadows for hours on end and watch a whole miniature world unfold or wander on Clifton Marshes watching the snipe,lapwings,curlews...sandpipers by the creek and shelducks nesting down rabbit-holes at the Breakwater , using the Observers Guides for identification I thought I was quite an expert . regarded by my schoolmates as a weirdo but it never bothered me ...if backed into a corner I came out fighting . Then in my teen-years , work ,girls ,music.beer and fishing got in the way, though whilst fishing I could still lose myself in my surroundings...whilst fishing the Stainforth and Keadby canal near Thorne I listened to a corncrake ...its grating sound was music to my ears ,but never managed to spot it ! Now Ive retired and paying frequent visits to Brockholes I am that child again...didnt realise how little I actually know or have forgotten ! Thanks for the experts for posting things on this page and being helpful on my wanderings .
