When I was a college Freshman, I discovered and loved reading Plato. He talked about achieving the Truthful, Beautiful and the good as being the highest goals of any state. I would add that achieving or striving for the truthful, beautiful and the good in everyday life can help bring about the public good individual by individual. But how do we bring about Good when we have polarized ideas of what constitutes that Public good. I may be wrong, but do not believe that underlying all of our huge political differences, individuals differ very much about just what it is that constitutes Public or what Plato called The Greater good. Nobody wants people to suffer from not having enough food to eat, clothes to wear or any basic essencial. The roads we take to bring solutions to these national problems differ. Democrats want to tax our way to the Public good and Republicans wish to let Market forces bring it about. Jan says, and dont worry because nobody listens to me, that neither way has worked. We still have schools which scarcely educate, health care which costs too much and jobs for fewer and fewer graduating from high school and college. Part of it is that we now export so many of our jobs. In the 1970s, television advertised The Union Label which proclaimed made in America. Business and government coluded to hurt the American worker by sending jobs anywhere cheaper. So now we have tech support fromIndea, and clothing from China or places even cheaper for businesses. Everything Im wearing at this moment came from another country and was probably produced in dreadful conditions. I dont believe Americans like this state of affairs. I suspect many people would pay another $10 per pair of levis to bring manufacturing back home. It would be patriotic to buy American. Jobs would come home, the economy would be stronger and we might be a small bit closer to attaining some small part of the Truthful, beautiful and the Good.
