When I was a kid, I subscribed to the notion that the only way you could make it as a singer, was to have a beautiful singing voice. Micky Dolenz and Paul McCartney come to mind when I think of singing voices that were born to make hit records, and that they did. I was not blessed with such a voice, and for the longest time that bothered me. You cant trade in a singing voice for a different model like you can a drum kit or a guitar. It doesnt work like that. You get the voice you got, and youre stuck with it. One day, I was watching the infamous Saturday Night Live episode where Joe Cocker performed, and John Belushi was standing behind him mimicking his every movement and idiosyncrasy. Not only did I find the humor in that, which Cocker didnt at the time. But I also noticed that there was noting refined about his voice at all. It sounded like it had miles on it, hard miles. But it was articulating the songs he sang, often times better than the people who wrote them. I learned how important it is to convey the song. That creates a beauty of its own. This song (to me) is beautiful. He doesnt sound like he restrained an ounce of emotion. The band was hitting on all cylinders, and at any moment, the wheels could have fallen off. When that happens in music there is nothing prettier. It got real loud in my car this afternoon. Rest easy Joe. https://youtube/watch?v=bbMyksobL-U
