When I was a kid I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan (hence a born Yankee-hater, later exceptions Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera). I promised myself that I would only attend the World Series if the Dodgers were in it. When the Dodgers left Brooklyn for LA, thanks to Walter OMalley and Robert Moses, the likelihood of fulfilling the promise to myself was remote. And after Sandy Koufax left my allegiance to the Dodgers waned and disappeared by the early 80s and by the late 80s I became a Red Sox fan. We have been season ticket holders to the Red Sox since 2002 and I never thought, given the fact that the Red Sox were the Dodgers of the American League (cursed with bad luck against the Yankees), that I would see a World Series in person. Now I have been blessed to see Dave Roberts steal, Big Papis dramatic home runs and three World Series won by the Red Sox. Yes, baseball can break your heart, as Bart Giamatti said, but oh what joy it can give.
