When I was a minister in Pittsburgh, white people believed I was being harassed by a white supremacist Nazi-sympathizing church member; they just couldnt see why it was a problem. Despite this mans advanced degrees (PhD and MD), otherwise progressive people saw him as a lovable doofus -- possibly suffering with Aspergers -- who was being victimized by my sensitivity. After that job, in 2011 I resigned my ministerial standing in the UUA. Tolerating the abuse made me hate myself; the pressure to pretend things were normal was more dangerous still.
