When I was a teenager, I met a woman with Downs Syndrome through my Moms work. This woman loved and adored my mother. She would call our house frequently and see what we were up to. Because, this is what you do when you love people. You care for them and desire to be with them. When I was 20 years old, I got hired at my group home, and this same woman just happened to be the best friend of one of my clients. She would call her friend, my client, and ask about me and my family through him. When she found out that I had gallbladder surgery when I was 22, she called me every day to make sure that I was doing alright. More recently, I have been able to go on community events with people of mental disabilities. I will often see her there. She will always crack jokes with me, ask me about my brother, my siblings, my parents, and my family dog. When I dont see her, shell call my cell phone, and shell close most messages with, I love you as a friend and youre a good man. When she interacts with me or the client at my house, all she cares about is our well being. When I hear Richard Dawkins say that, we should abort Downs Syndrome babies it both grieves and upsets me. The problem with listening to a man who calls himself as an evolutionary biologist, we fail to ask a question, What are we supposed to evolve into? Dawkins seems to believe that we are meant to evolve into rational and intelligent beings, not empathetic and compassionate ones like my friend with Downs Syndrome. The beauty of Christian Truth is that it claims that the weakest and most vulnerable members of our society and communities are the most indispensable (1 Cor. 12:22). Dawkins sees people with Downs Syndrome as a failure in human evolution. God sees them as the representation of his light and goodness one earth. Richard would be so lucky to have a friend like her.
