When I was about seven, we moved onto a piece of property in Central Oregon where the barn was about a hundred yards from the house and any source of water. I had to carry a 5 gallon bucket of water out to water the animals. This was my responsibility with little oversight. Well, no oversight for quite some time, as it happens. Eventually my seven year old self neglected the job and the animals suffered. Its been a lifelong regret. My father punished me then, and told me afterward that it helped me learn a valuable lesson. He was right, in some respects. I learned more than one lesson. I learned that, first, when youre responsible for something elses life you have to respect that responsibility. Second, its unreasonable, stupid, and quite likely cruel to leave the fate of other creatures in the hands of someone who has not yet learned this lesson.
