When I was at home two weeks ago, in Kwa-Zulu Natal, I had an opportunity to have lunch with a person who has spent almost 40 years in public education. He was my high school principal until he was promoted to Circuit Manager at the north coast. I asked him: What is wrong with our public education? His answer was: The biggest problem is #SADTU (South African Democratic Teachers Union). He says South Africa does have potential to make a difference in its education, but the problem is that people who are supposed to help us achieve this, do not value education. He says SADTU members do not mind calling the examination centre and order the halt of the examinations, until their demands are met. That’s how they strike. And his question was: What is more important? Shouldn’t education for learners come first? His words were powerful. They made me think. What do you think of SADTU and other teachers unions? Should we really unionize the education sector? I will share more on my blog in weeks to come, about my conversation with a man who contributed so much to my success. He was my principal throughout my high school career. The changes he brought to my school were amazing.
