When I was growing up, I had a dream that I was going to find a cure for cancer or create a super-food that would solve world hunger. While I may not accomplish these tasks, I know that part of my vocation is to make a difference in the world. Through my experiences in life and in parish work I have come to a deeper understanding of how wounded we all are and how there is a deep human desire to connect, to be in community with others and have meaning in life. The world starves us of authentic relationships and with broken hearts and the hunger for something more in life we show up on the Church doorsteps. The way inside the doors is different for each person: for some it is Sacraments, others it is being a Sponsor or Godparent, the loss of a job, a relationship ending or death of a loved one. In every road to the doors, it is the prime opportunity that God is giving us as a gift. He is inviting us to join Him in His activity and in a sense saying “here is a hungry lost sheep I have brought home.” As a leader in the Church, I take this moment very seriously. Curing cancer or world hunger may not be my task medically speaking, but anytime I can help heal wounds that all our parishioners are carrying around (the walking wounded), God has cured something just as painful and deadly through my ministry. Every time I help someone find his/her way back to God in the Church, I have pointed that person to the Food their souls have been starving for. A great joy for me is to be a guide in the life of the parish that encourages someone in their personal journey to discover their vocation and ministry that can be the meaning in life a person desires. It is in all these ways that we stop ‘doing’ Church and we become Church. Who are the poor and hungry people that we see everyday that may not be obvious and how can we welcome them home?
