When I was in Winnipeg a few weeks ago for a conference, I went out for supper down at The Forks. I was facing the windows and could see outside where I noticed two young girls clearly and heavily intoxicated. They were becoming a little physical with each other and could barely stand. I was very worried for their safety as it was dipping into freezing and getting dark out. I proceeded outside where I spent the next hour talking with them, helping them contact parents, bringing them water and ultimately holding the hair of one of the girls as she vomited. I did not want to lose sight of them for they were in too vulnerable of a state. They were easy victims for numerous things. The owner of the restaurant called security who joined the girls and I, but ultimately because I had a good rapport with the teens, they let me handle the situation and just stood by to help if needed, they too were concerned. Happily, the girls went safely home into a warm bed. Today, I received a beautiful email from someone who was in the restaurant while this all took place. They had retrieved my contact information from the owner of the restaurant. Their words brought me to tears as they told their side of what they witnessed watching me outside with the girls. I was appreciative of their kindness but what struck me the most is when they said Not everyone would have done what you did. This brings me to the point of this message. I do not want to believe that. For me, this wasnt a choice, this was instinctual. I seen someone in need and knew to help. I want to believe that inside each of us is the person who will step forward when they see a need. I know that we all have the power to make a difference if we choose to use our voice and listen to that deep resounding echo inside that beckons you to step in. So speak up. Be heard. Lend a hand. And always, always act from the heart. Much love. Suzanne
