When I was in college, this was a very popular song and was in heavy rotation. I loved it and it made me go see him in concert. He was amazing. On the flip side of that coin, he opened up for (wait for it) Richard Marx..... Huh what? Those two are not even CLOSE to the same genre. The Zevon fans booed Marx, and the Marx fans booed Zevon.
