When I was pregnant with Ahmi, I spent two months searching for that smell in the apartment. My ex said it was in my head, my landlord said it was pregnancy brain. But find it I did eventually, and it smelled like death- pickled water chestnuts buried in the back of our pantry. Yes, I can testify, real Asian food aint that moo goo gai pan stuff in the Chinese buffet. It is some raunchy smelling stuff. But ooooo, yum. I used to travel several hours just to have salted fish in Thailand at a place in Ubon that made it perfectly. Perfectly stinky.
