When I was younger and I got out of line my mother would make me go outside to grab a switch off of the big tree in our yard. It was terrifying. But Im almost positive I had done something to deserve the punishment. And it only happened two or three times. When I was younger my grandmother would wash my mouth out with Lemon Joy, at first. Then there was an bit on 60 Minutes about the harmfulness of Lemon Joy, so she switched to just regular bar soap. This usually happened if I said damn or, more specifically god damn. I dont think I ever cursed in a secular way. At least not then. My mother and my grandmother are two of the greatest women I have ever met. And I am sure every great quality I have was nurtured by them. Occasionally I got out of line as a child and I was punished. I feel like watching scary movies as a kid has more of an effect on me then my punishments, at least in a negative way. And, of course, I was never beaten. Im not saying its okay to hit your kid, but I am saying that I see a lot of things in life on a case by case basis. Im not saying Im right. Im just saying thats how it is for me.
