When I write music, I always think that the ones that I write for more commercial reasons will be the ones that do the best- those that are meant more to entertain and sound catchy. I was surprised that at the studio, though, the owner said he thought that one of my most vulnerable songs was the one that he thought was the most commercial and that would really sell. Writing from your soul is difficult, emotional, and scary, and putting it out there for everyone to listen to is even scarier. But sometimes a musicians job is to go deeper than you want to go so others can have an emotional release and be able to sing along with you something that they dont yet have the courage to say themselves.
