When John Barnes talks about racism, people listen. One of the most gifted players of his or any other generation, the winger was called a n***** on training grounds and on pitches throughout his career. And after the greatest exhibition of his genius he was told by bigoted fans that England only won 1-0 in the Maracana in 1984 because, due to his skin colour, only Mark Hateleys goal counted. As an extremely high-profile black player at a time when racism still poured from the stands, few have suffered in the way Barnes has suffered. That famous picture of him back-heeling a banana out of play during a derby match against Everton in 1988 is rightly iconic – indeed, it is one of the most evocative sporting images ever captured on these shores.
