When Max was diagnosed, just about two hours after we found the tumor, I was all alone in the PICU with my sweet four-year-old boy and knew that I had to tell him something about what was going on. Why the ambulance? What do you say? Who is remotely prepared for this? Since he was still little I knew I could use something imaginative, something in his frame of reference. I said that bad guys built a fort in his brain and that the awesome ninja doctor was going to get them out in just a few hours. At that point I didnt know that hed need chemo, radiation, and extensive therapies, but I knew that we had to somehow explain surgery. What transpired thereafter was the development of a narrative that we all clung to. The bad guys love to grow, divide, and take over but our good guys can be empowered to fight back with green foods, superpower medicines, and anything that is Maxs superpower color (green!). Just weeks later this is Maxs processing of that narrative: https://youtube/watch?v=0Pns79d-3xk As parents we need help with this. Most of us do anyway. We need help constructive these narratives with our kids, getting of family, medical teams and communities to acknowledge and use the narratives as well. We need counseling support. We need to have access to avenues to talk with our kids, support our marriages, and engage our loved ones. We have a number of resources that MLP is launching to address these challenges to thrivership. Stay tuned.
