When Patty Duke ironed her hair....I had to do it too! I could brush the sides out and iron them, although I managed to have this big crease in the side of my hair. I could not get to the back so I asked my 4 year old brother to help me. I lowered the ironing board, sat on the floor in front of it and brushed the back of my long hair out across the board and proceeded to ask my brother to iron my hair. It did not occur to me my brother did not know how to iron...and when the smell of burnt hair reached my nose....my burnt hair.....it was already too late to save any of it. My hair was 8 inches long on either side and to the back of my neck in the back. I had no other choice but to pull the sides back in a pony tail and wear it that way for months until my hair grew out just in time for the next craze....setting my hair in OJ cans....and then trying to sleep.
