When Philip Hammond, our revered Foreign Secretary, was asked in - TopicsExpress

When Philip Hammond, our revered Foreign Secretary, was asked in the midst of the Gaza massacres whether he thought the Israeli action was disproportionate, he refused to answer. Hed said disproportionate was an emotive word. Now a five-year old could have told us it was disproportionate, if not actually using that word. From an early age we all have an instinctive sense of what is and is not fair. There is nothing emotive about the word. It is a concept in international law and a straightforward English term here describing undeniable fact. So if a five-year old understands it why not the man in charge of all our international relations? What was going on? I discovered the answer recently. This from an article by Peter Osborne in the Telegraph of 12/12/12. When William Hague described Israels murderous attack on Lebanon in 2006 as disproportionate the Conservative Friends of Israel complained in person to David Cameron. The CFI obtained a promise that the word would never be used again to describe any action by Israel. Never. Ever. Whatever Israel did. This promise binds all future Tory MPs, forever. The CFI has the power to dictate what words governments not yet even elected can use. This is supposed to be a democracy and our MPs are in thrall to a lobby representing a bunch of criminals and gangsters.
