When Two Masters Meet By: Arjan T. Daswani Singapore (Article as appeared at CHINMAYA YUVA KENDRA website - 2003) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I read the following article online in a magazine published by the CHINMAYA YUVA KENDRA, of the CHINMAYA MISSION, founded by the great Guru Swami Chinmayananda. The article narrates Swami Chinmayanandas personal experience with Swami Gangeshwaranandaji Maharaj, a great VED GURU, who happens to be my GURU and who left His physical body on 14 February 1992, at the age of 111 years. The article goes like this: Swami Gangeshwarananda was 108 years old when Gurudev (Swami Chinmayanandji) dedicated a yagna in His honour. Swamji (Chinmayanandji) had great respect for this old, blind Swami and visited Him whenever He could. Once, Swamiji, with His padukas on, had just walked across some wooden planks over a canal and arrived at the blind Swamis side without informing anyone. Chinmayananda, so youve come ! said Swami Gangeshwarananda. Swamiji (Chinmayananda) was curious how the Swami had known that it was He who had arrived. The way you walk. answered Gangeshwaranandaji. Only one Swami walks like that and it is Chinmayananda. You walk like an army general ! While I am very pleased that a great Swami Chinmayanandaji had great respect for Swami Gangeshwaranandaji Maharaj, my Guru, I narrate my own similar experience which is also very interesting: Many times in the past I visited India to pay respects to my Guru, Sadguru Swami Gangeshwaranandji Maharaj either on Guru Purnima (which generally falls in July every year), or on His Birthday (the same date as the birth date of the Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Sahibji - but the date varies in the English calender, falling some times in December and some times in January). The devotees held celebrations on that day every year! I remember I went there with my son Rajesh in the last week of December 1979. One of those days was Gurujis Birthday! Swamiji at that time was staying at J B Mangharams, Breach Candy, Mumbai. When I arrived, I found a large crowd of devotees. All were told that Guruji was unwell and instructed to pay their respects to Gurujis Chakhries (wooden sandals), placed outside Gurujis closed room, and leave. When I was told that, I was disheartened and began to plead. I have come all the way from Singapore.. and so on ... A kind Swami present there, hearing my plea, whispered in my ear, The only way for you to go in to have Darshan of Guruji is to pretend to be a Doctor and enter with a team of Doctors who are going to arrive now to see Gurdevji And I did that!. I saw Gurdevjis lying in coma. All Doctors began to examine Guruji and made serious consultations amongst themselves. I was quietly listening. One of the Doctors then asked my opinion on the case and I was stunned and confused! I confessed that I was not a Doctor but had merely entered with them. They ordered me to leave immediately. I felt very sad and nearly broke down! But they would not care and as they forcibly escorted me to the exit, Guruji murmered, Arjan ko bulao .. (Call Arjan). I went to Guruji and bowed down at His feet. Guruji told me, Beta, kal dupahr ko teen baje aa jao.. (son, come tomorrow at 3 p m). Which I did! And when I arrived, I saw Guruji was 100% well and fully awake and chatting jovially with a crowd of devotees seated around Him. Guruji asked all of them to leave for a while and gave me a nice, warm and affectionate closed door meeting. I was very pleased with that. My point here is that when I had arrived there with the Doctors team, I had not announced my name and Guruji was in coma. Still, my great Guru recognized me and uttered my name! This great Guru, whom people call blind had a kind of Inner Vision only a few Great Saints could have! He recited all the four Vedas by heart giving reference to the exact location, word number, sentence number, paragraph number and page number without physically looking at them. And the kind of reasoning and explanations He gave on the verses from the Vedas, not only stunned all, in fact surpassed all those attending. He saw much more than you, me and all could! So much so, He even cured Himself In a jiffy in order to receive me at the time He had appointed. That was but a Divine Power! Thus, I am not surprised at Swami Chinmayanandas story. However, the fact that Swami Chinmayanandaji respected my great Guru so much, pleases me more and my respect for Swami Chinmayanandaji is greatly increased! I have great respect and love for my Guru Swami Gangeshwaranandji Maharaj and have many more interesting personal experiences with Him which I will share with confidential few at an opportune time. PS A devotee just sent me a photo copy of a letter that was signed and sent by the Great Swami Chinmayanandaji, concerning my GURU Swami Gangeshwaranandji Maharaj Udasin on 17 April 1986. I append an extract from Swami Chinmayanandajis letter: ...........You deserve. Shri Swami Gangeshwarananda knows who can serve best in what field. You are more than fully equipped to be the Editor of Veda Pradeep. No other Indian saint or scholar has in our times made such a deep study, has such a perfect insight into the Vedas and no one in the last two thousand years has done so much in the spread of the literature as Gangeshwarananda.
