When a bar robbery takes places and the quiet bartender Bob finds - TopicsExpress

When a bar robbery takes places and the quiet bartender Bob finds an abused puppy, it begins to unravel a betrayal born out of greed and desperation to survive on the mean streets of Brooklyn. This muted, low key crime drama from writer Dennis Leanne and director Michael R. Roskam has some of the most nuanced, phenomenal performances yet from the late James Gandolfini and Tom Hardy. While the plot moves slowly, the characters and the relationships they foster for each other take center stage and as a character piece it works quite well. The strong yet slightly stilted writing and direction keeps us intrigued with the character arcs especially for Hardys character Bob and his mysterious past as well as the desperate yet manipulative cousin Marv from Gandolfini. Every one in the cast is great but the cinematography is stunning utilizing the natural lighting to give a gritty look to Brooklyn that makes it quite a dangerous yet depressing place for lost souls to be trapped in. While it does take some time for the film to begin, the closer we get to the truth about a murder and the bar robbery, the film picks up the pace and rolls into its violent yet conclusive finale that satisfies rather than disappoints or infuriates the audience. The Drop may share similar qualities from other Crime Drama stories from its setting, atmosphere, and main plot beats but it is the nuanced character performances from a stellar cast, gorgeous cinematography, and strong writing in character development that makes this film a class of its own.
