When a completely life changing, irreversible, and socially damming request is made to you by God, how do you respond? “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” I don’t know about you, but the words of Mary, the Mother of Christ, are striking when you take into account what the request actually was. We like to think, “How wonderful, to be the Mother of the Messiah!” But the reality was that her taking on this role condemned her. A girl who became pregnant outside of marriage in first century Judea could have been banished, sold into slavery, forced into prostitution, or stoned to death. Yet, her response is pure, unquestionable acceptance. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, I challenge you to ponder the boldness & courage of Mary. Are we prepared to carry Christ with us regardless of social stigma, cultural apathy, and public criticism? When God asks us to make massive changes, can we answer, “I am your servant!”?
