When a guy who lived over 200 years ago knew more than many do today, we have failed as a country. I fear were approaching a time when literacy itself will become the next battleground of the religious. We will begin to see legislation allowing parents to opt their children out of basic reading classes in order to protect their religious rights. This battle, of course, is already beginning in Arab countries regarding women and education. It can be argued 200 years ago Thomas Paines view was still revolutionary but there are no longer any excuses. Arguments for or based in fairy tales should not be happening in todays age of knowledge. I weep for every child raised in a religious family. They are robbed of the very gift life gave us, the ability to understand the world around us.
