When considering common core, the first question that has to be - TopicsExpress

When considering common core, the first question that has to be asked is the proverbial "why"? Why do we need common core now when we look back at our educational dominance from the 50s -80s? What has changed so dramatically about our society that we (I do not consider myself part of that collective "we" by the way) have decided that going to a common core is the solution to our massive educational problems? Consider the countries that outperform us that have adopted a common core...they are small...homogenous for the most part...speak one language...have significantly invested in a technical infrastructure such that approximately 90% of households are on the Internet and have some sort of smart device...and are not democratic republics...we are 50 diverse states with outlying territories...we are certainly not homogenous...and many languages are spoken in this country...while the powers that be said they looked to other countries for a model for common core, did they really look at how it would be implemented in this country or were they looking for a quick solution that sounds really good, pads pockets, and further puts educators in the position of being monotone purveyors of a predetermined educational destiny over which their authentic teacher voice and that of their students will never be heard...well I say no thank you...
