When did we concede, that stress was an inevitability of nursing, and when did it become our fault as nurses. It seems, to be a nurse,we have many negative inevitabilties. Violence and aggression, bullying and harassment and now stress and associated mental health issues that it can lead to. What do we hear from the experts and the commentators in the health service and the all seeing nursing managers and leads? Ill tell you what we dont hear we dont hear what needs to be provided by the organisation to stamp out these disgusting behaviours, that do not belong in our society, let alone a profession where we desperately need to attract people of a caring, empathetic, compassionate disposition. No, we tell nurses you need to suck it up, you need to toughen up, here is a strategy to deal with V&A, here is a limiting policy to deal with bullying and harassment, here are your strategies for coping with stress, like it was the nurses fault for not handling it better, like they brought it on themselves. Its not nurses that are needed its battle hardened veterans. Where is the caring, empathetic, compassionate nurse? Ill tell you buried deep beneath all the coping strategies they have to employ just to get through the day. When is someone going to stand up and fight for us? Bad news guys they are not. Better to have sheep who follow, who once in while can be lead to the slaughter. No, you want things to change? Nurses take a stand: say no to violence and aggression, no to bullying and harassment and no to stress in the workplace. Its about time the organisation and those in charge took responsibility and shoulder the blame for their short comings in providing a safe, acceptable environment for nurses to work in. Stand up and let people know, you are tired of watching your colleagues being stripped of their dignity, their expertise ignored, their voices being silenced. Or, just carry on doing your shifts, accepting this is nursing. Apathy the worst kind of cowardice there is. Some will say here he goes again, another rant, well at least I have an opinion.
