“When he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich” —Luke 18:23 We can be so rich in our own poverty, or in the awareness of the fact that we are nobody, that we will never be a disciple of Jesus. Or we can be so rich in the awareness that we are somebody that we will never be a disciple. Are we willing to be destitute and poor even in our sense of awareness of our destitution and poverty? If not, that is why we become discouraged. Discouragement is disillusioned self-love, and self-love may be love for our devotion to Jesus— not love for Jesus Himself.
