When it comes to Autism most of the time the conversation is focus on what and how to teach an autistic child. Seldom it is what we can learn from them. Since its a spectrum, I will only share my experience with Elijah (12 yrs). Christmas: He has not asked for a gift and does not want anything, when he get gifts we have to call him and tell him to open it. He would say Merry Christmas and sing the songs and that is sufficient. Birthday: He gets very excited when the candles are lit with the birthday song, that is sufficient. Never heard him say, “I am bored”, and no complaining. When he does see something in the store he likes and I say its too expensive he would say, “oh oh choose again.” He does not care at all about the brand of clothes, shoes, or electronic gadgets he does not have. At 12 he still hold parents hand in public and kiss a zillion times.
